How to Verify Your Identity for Companies House: A Step-by-Step Guide

If you’re setting up or managing a company in the UK, you’ll soon need to complete a crucial step – verifying your identity for Companies House.

This is part of the UK government’s commitment to making company ownership more transparent and preventing fraud. But what exactly does it mean, and how can you do it?

Here’s everything you need to know.

Why Do You Need to Verify Your Identity?

This includes:

It’s designed to ensure that the information on the Companies House register is accurate and trustworthy, and to prevent the misuse of UK companies for illegal purposes.

When Will You Need to Do It?

You can already voluntarily verify your identity now, and are strongly encouraged to do so early to avoid delays or complications later.

✅ From 8 April 2025, identity verification became available voluntarily.
✅ From autumn 2025, it will become mandatory for all relevant individuals.

You’ll need to verify if you:

✔ Register a new company or LLP
✔ Are appointed as a director or PSC of an existing company
✔ File certain documents at Companies House

How Do You Verify Your Identity?

You have three options:

1. Online via Companies House

The fastest way is through the Companies House online service using GOV.UK One Login.
You’ll need:

2. In Person at the Post Office

For UK residents, you can verify your identity in person at selected Post Offices — but you must first check eligibility through the Companies House service.

3. Through an Authorised Agent

If you work with an accountant, solicitor or formation agent registered as an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP), they can complete the process for you.

What Happens When You Verify?

It’s a two-step process:

Step 1: Verify your identity and receive your personal Companies House code.
Step 2: From autumn 2025, link your verified identity to your company records using this code.

What Happens If You Don’t Verify?

According to the guidance:

“If you or any other directors do not comply with identity verification requirements on time, you will not be able to file your company’s confirmation statement or other filings. You’ll also be committing an offence and there are a range of consequences, including a financial penalty and being unable to start a new company.”

It’s therefore essential to act early and avoid any disruption to your business.

How to Prepare Now

Even though the rules don’t become mandatory until autumn 2025, you can already complete the process voluntarily. To prepare:

✔ Verify your identity now if possible – from 8 April 2025, the service is live
✔ Keep your ID documents up to date
✔ Check that your details on the Companies House register match your ID
✔ Speak to your accountant or agent if you prefer them to handle the process

Final Thoughts

Verifying your identity for Companies House is a straightforward but vital step for anyone involved in a UK company. Acting now while it’s still voluntary ensures a smooth transition and avoids last-minute stress when the rules become mandatory in autumn 2025.
